Timothée Chalamet will make his debut as musical guest when “Saturday Night Live” returns in January to resume its milestone 50th season.
On Friday, the NBC sketch comedy show announced its post-holiday host lineup: Dave Chappelle on Jan. 18, with musical guest GloRilla, and Chalamet, in his third hosting stint, on Jan. 25. Chappelle and GloRilla are making an appearance ahead of the 2025 Grammy Awards on Feb. 2, in which both have nominations: best comedy album for “Dave Chappelle: The Dreamer” and best rap performance and best rap song for “Yeah Glo!”
This will be GloRilla and Chalamet’s first time on the show as musical guests. Chalamet has hosted twice before, in December 2020 and November 2023. His dual host and musical guest appearance arrives a month after the biopic “A Complete Unknown” was released in theaters, earning him favorable reviews for his portrayal of the legendary Bob Dylan.
Chappelle’s appearance marks his fourth time pulling hosting duties; his other three stints in November 2016, 2020 and 2022, included the first “SNL” shows following the last two presidential elections. This one comes two days before the inauguration of President-elect Donald Trump for a second term.
The Jan. 18 and 25 shows lead up to “SNL’s” 50th anniversary primetime special on Sunday, Feb. 16. The show will then return on Saturdays starting March 1.
Chalamet, known for roles in “Wonka,” the “Dune” films and “Call Me By Your Name,” is also a trained singer, with his real vocals featured in the 2023 Roald Dahl-inspired musical prequel as well as the Dylan biopic. He spent five years preparing for the role, including training with a harmonica coach to perfect his interpretation of Dylan and his musical style.
“It was important for me to sing and play live. Because if I can actually do it, why should there be an element of artifice here?” Chalamet said in a movie preview released by Searchlight Pictures in November. “And I’m proud that we took that leap.”
Chalamet performed 40 songs live while filming, according to producer Fred Berger, with each performance involving singing and playing both guitar and harmonica.
