Is Chris Evans Returning to Marvel for Avengers: Doomsday? He Says…
Following reports of Chris Evans returning to his Captain America role for Avengers: Doomsday, the actor addressed the rumors.
Chris Evans’ future as Captain America has been revealed.
Nearly five years after Chris last played the superhero in 2019’s Avengers: Endgame, the actor answered the most popular rumor about his iconic role: Will he return as Captain America in additional Marvel films?
“That’s not true,” Chris told Esquire as part of Anthony Mackie’s Jan. 31 cover story, adding that rumors of him reprising his role “always happens every couple years.”
“I’ve just stopped responding to it,” the 43-year-old continued. “Yeah, no — happily retired!”
The actor’s words come nearly a month after The Wrap reported he would take Captain America’s vibranium shield for another spin. In December, they revealed Chris would appear in Avengers: Doomsday, which is set to release in May 2026. While details concerning his character’s importance to the movie were unknown at the time, the announcement shocked a few people, including Anthony.
The 8 Mile actor said he “didn’t know” Chris was interested in returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

“I talked to Chris a few weeks ago and it wasn’t on the table then. At least, he didn’t tell me it was on the table, because I asked him,” Anthony told Esquire. “I was like, ‘You know, they said they’re bringing everyone back for the movie. Are you coming back?’”
The 46-year-old, who’s starring as the new Captain America in the franchise’s upcoming film Captain America: A Brave New World, said he found out about the rumors from his manager. “[My manager said,] ‘Oh, so I guess Chris is coming back.’ That’s all I know,” he said. “I haven’t seen a script.”
While Chris isn’t back in the MCU for good, his former role—which he debuted in 2011’s Captain America: First Avenger and retired eight years later in Endgame—is in great hands. Anthony originally played Falcon (Sam Wilson) in the Marvel films, and his friendship with Captain America always stemmed from how much they admired each other. That connection has carried over to their real-life friendship, especially in how Chris passed on the Captain America torch to Anthony.
Anthony told Fandango the Knives Out actor showed him the film’s script, which revealed he would be reviving Captain America, while they were hanging out. “We hug, we jump up and down. It was hilarious,” Anthony described the sweet moment on Jan. 7. “[Chris’] excitement for me becoming Captain America let me know that he knew I could handle it.”
